Whangarei is the major city in Northland and a haven for yachts. It is a pleasant, thriving city with an equable climate, though it's main attractions are in the surrounding area. The beaches at Whangarei heads about 35 km east are incredibly scenic with many tiny bays and inlets, and the Tutukaka and Bream Bay Coats can be done as day trips from Whangarei. The climate and soil combine to make this city a gardener's paradise, reflected in the the many parks and gardens in the city.

Location Auckland (658 km north of Wellington)
On the shores of the Waitemata and Manukau harbours, Auckland is surrounded by water and covered in volcanic hills. It has a population of around one million - over a quarter of all New Zealanders - and is also the big city for the Polynesian islands of the SouthPacific. All these foreign influences help to give Auckland a much more cosmopolitan atmosphere than other cities in New Zealand.

Location Great Barrier Island (88 km north of Auckland)
Great Barrier Island is the largest island in the Hauraki Gulf. It is a rugged scenic island, resembling the Coromandel Peninsula to which it was once joined. With a population of around 1000 living on the 119-sq-km island, there's plenty of open space. Great Barrier Island has hot springs, historic kauri dams, a forest sanctuary, and a network of tramping tracks. Because there are no possums on the island to eat it, the native bush is still lush. The island's main attractions are it's beautiful beaches and its fine tramping. The west coast has save sandy beaches; the east coast beaches are good for surfing.

Location Rotorua (234 km south of Auckland)
Rotorua is the most popular tourist area of the North Island, if not of New Zealand. Nicknamed "Sulphur City", it has the most energetic thermal activity in the country with bubbling mud pools, gushing geysers and evil smells. All around the city, steam drifts up from behind bushes, out of road drains and around rocks. A strong smell of rotten eggs prevades the town, but after a couple of hours the smell isn't noticed anymore.

Location Dunedin (366 km from Christchurch)
Dunedin is predominantly a student town and there are about 12,000 attending the tertiary institutions here; this represents about 10% of Dunedin's population of 113.680. The local entertainment scene, cafe and pub life, and arts are a consequence of this.Another very evident feature is Dunedin's distinct Scottishness - not surprising considering the name is Celtic for Edinburgh. It is a solid no nonsense sort of place - second city of the South Island, home of New Zealand's first university and at one time (during the goldrush days) the largest city in the country.

Location Te Anau (988 km from Picton)
Lake Te Anau, and its three arms that penetrate into the mountainous forested shore, was gouged out by a huge glacier. It is 417 metres at its deepest and 53km long and 10km across at its widest, making it New Zealands second largest lake after Taupo in the North Island. The township of 1500 people is beautifully situated on the lake shore, and is a bit like a smaller version of Queenstown. There are all manner of activities and trips to keep you busy, although for many visitors the town is just a jumping-off point for trips to Milford and the Milford Track.
